Poppy Scotland Appeal
Ayr Poppy Appeal 2010 breaks all previous records!
£27,403.45 was a 35% improvement on the best ever previous total and 42% greater than the 2009 collection.
Geoff Barber, the Ayr appeal organiser, said “the people of Ayr have been incredibly generous – the collectors found a welcoming smile wherever they went and tremendous willingness to put cash in the cans.”
The Rotary Club of Ayr was asked by Poppy Scotland to take responsibility for organising the Poppy Appeal in Ayr in 2010. Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Ayr and the Lions Club of Ayr and Prestwick volunteered to help together with 3 members of the Territorial Army, 51 TA cadets and a few other individuals. Altogether 107 collectors were involved. Some 600 cans were used in the collection, with most being distributed to businesses, schools, hospitals and colleges in the area. Manned collections were organised on 5 days, three at TESCO, one at Dobbies and one at Morrison’s. The TA cadets filled 67 cans during their street collection in Ayr on Poppy Saturday

TESCO Customer Services Manager, Clare Cuningham receives a Poppyscotland Award Certificate from Geoff Barber for a collection of £3,832.85 |
There were some outstanding results:
| TA cadet’s street collection | £3,555.33 |
| TESCO | £3,832.85 |
| Dobbies | £1,018.07 |
| Morrisons | £2,063.28 |
| Ayr Hospital | £ 809.31 |
| Ayr St Columba Church | £1,007.91 |
But by far the greater part of the total was made up by cans in small shops, schools, pubs, clubs, hotels, care homes, colleges, libraries, offices, filling stations and so on, where the amount collected was often under £100, but all together they make a tremendous contribution and a real difference to the lives of veterans and their families in Scotland.
A very big thank you from Geoff Barber and all his team to the people of Ayr.
